Dunlap, Illinois is a residential town of approximately 2,500 population. It is located in Radnor Township, Peoria County, in the State of Illinois on Route 91 off Route 150 out of Peoria. The early settlers came from the East, New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. Many came overland with immigrant wagons, with oxen following the timber and streams, and consuming weeks of travel and hardships in making the journey in search of a place to settle on the prairies of Illinois. The first to settle in Radnor Township was Erastus Peet in 1834.

Dunlap has been home to 2 hardware and implement stores, 2 grain elevators, 3 grocery stores, 2 hotels, 2 restaurants, a butcher shop, 2 blacksmiths, a band, a post office, a cobbler shop, a bakery, a barber shop, a saloon, an opera house, 3 doctors, a drugstore, a livery stable, three meeting halls, and a bank. There was also a cooperative cheese factory which was discontinued sometime in the 1920's when Rozells of Peoria offered a higher price for the farmers' milk. Most of these businesses are no longer located in the village of Dunlap. Only one grain elevator, the post office, a bank, and a restaurant remain, but other businesses have taken their place.

This is indeed an historical town that retains much of its early heritage. While many of the original buildings have been replaced with modern ones, there are still many artifacts of the town's earliest days as an agricultural and farming community. The Dunlap Public Library is an important haven for various items and photos that allow current residents to learn about their town's history.
