Elmwood is a city in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,945 at the 2000 census. Elmwood is part of the Peoria-Pekin MSA. Growth in the city of Peoria is extending towards Elmwood, in additon to the village of Dunlap. Peoria County, Illinois (pop. 183,433) combines big city assets with a small town lifestyle and is fast becoming an attractive location for new businesses. It ranks among the top three U.S. counties relative to the ratio between quality of life and cost of living. The County has excellent agricultural and industrial resources, with a taxable valuation of $1.9 billion for property taxes paid in 1999. The County encompasses 629 square miles running 32 miles north/south and 28 miles east/west. The Illinois River, which carries 39 million tons of freight through the County each year, offers boating, fishing and water skiing for its users. Residents and tourists also visit one of many public parks, such as the 3,500-acre Jubilee State Park, the 1,855-acre Wildlife Prairie Park or the Peoria Park District with 6,000 preservation acres. Peoria County is home to Bradley University, Illinois Central College and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. There are 103 public schools within the County, including 4,032 teachers and 28,112 students. A number of private schools are also located in the County. Three hospitals, each with more than 225 beds serve Peoria County and the surrounding communities, including Central Illinois' only Level 1 trauma center.
