Indian River, Michigan

Indian River is situated at the point where the Sturgeon River flows into Burt Lake and where the Indian River flows out of Burt Lake into Mullett Lake. I-75 passes though the area with two interchanges nearby. Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 25 miles to the north and Gaylord is 28 miles to the south. Cheboygan is about 21 miles to the northeast on M-27. M-68 connects with US 31 at Alanson, 11 miles to the west and with M-33 about 9 miles to the east. The Indian River provides a navigable channel between Burt and Mullett lakes.. No matter when you live in Indian River, there will be lots to see and do. Autumn is especially pretty, when the trees are full of color. This is the perfect time to take a drive around town. Don't forget your camera! The hunters will be out and about, trying to get their prized whitetail deer or turkey. In the winter time, you can take advantage of the hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile and cross country ski trails, take a drive over to the downhill ski resorts located in neighboring towns, or go ice fishing. When spring rolls around, take time to stop and notice the trilliums in full bloom in the woods, along with the other wildflowers. Morel mushroom hunting is a favorite pastime of visitors and residents alike. Of course, you can always just take a walk and breath in the fresh air, too. Summer is always busy. There are so many things to do and never enough time to do them. If you are an outdoors person, Indian River is the place for you! Fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, sunbathing, golfing, and more await you. Indian River has lots of great downtown shops for you to stop into. Whether you are looking for northern Michigan apparel, souvenirs, gifts, or fudge, you'll find it all right here. There is plenty for the kids to do, too. Don't forget to take them to play adventure golf at Big Bear Adventures. And when the day is through, relax with a nice dinner at any of the area's fine restaurants. Located within Indian Lake, Burt Lake State Park draws a large number of tourists each year, assisting in the local economy, part of which is reliant on the influx of summer travelers who take part in the watersports, camping facilities, and other attractions around the area. Burt Lake State Park is open from April through November. Visitors can enjoy camping, boating, fishing, and 2,000 feet of sandy frontage on Burt Lake. There is one mile of hiking trails at the park (no bikes, horses, or ORV's allowed). There are also many other activities located nearby, such as the Cross In The Woods, snowmobile and cross country skiing trails, golf, and fine dining. Indian River, Michigan is home to The Cross In The Woods, a local landmark since 1954. The 55 foot high crucifix was made of a single redwood tree. The 7 ton bronze sculpture of Christ was created by Marshall M. Fredericks and added to the cross in 1959. The sculpture measures an impressive 22 feet wide and 31 feet high.
