Saint Johns, Michigan

Saint Johns is was organized in 1853 by John Swegles and Rev. C. A. Lamb who along with state officials came to the area to speculate on land, since the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad proposed building a line through the area. The "Saint" was reference to Rev. Lamb’s efforts and the "Johns" from Swegle’s first name. It was incorporated into a village in 1857. It became a city in 1904.

Its economic base stems from local business and from its function as a commuter town to the greater Lansing area. Locally, it is supported largely by auto industry manufacturing, production of parts such as ball bearings, piston rings, and compressors. Tool and die manufacturing is located in the area, as well as a significant amount of small businesses. St. Johns celebrates its mint festival every August commemorating its agricultural tradition of peppermint and spearmint production, dating back to the late 1800’s.
