Springfield is located in northwestern Calhoun County. It is a major suburb of Battle Creek, which is just to the east. Springfield is best known for the location of the Springfield Air Base, operated by the National Guard. It also contains the local airport to the Battle Creek area which is adjacent to the base. Springfield is primarily a residential community surrounded by a small industrial park.

This community was first named Merrill Park in 1904, when D. J. Merrill officially platted the area. It was changed to Springfield when C.W. Post moved here from Springfield, Illinois to set up the cereal factory. It remained under the auspices of Battle Creek Township until 1952, when it was incorporated as a city. It was eventually annexed as part of the city of Battle Creek in 1960 but fought it and two years later it was restored to its own identity.
