Walker is a community of 20,000+ residents, just north-west of Grand Rapids, making it a wonderful choice for those who work in Grand Rapids, but want to have a home with a slightly more rural feel. In 1962, due to renewed annexation pressures on several large industrial areas of the Township; petitions were circulated throughout the Township for incorporation as a "Home Rule City". After successfully voting for incorporation, a Charter Commission drew up a charter for the new proposed City of Walker. This appeared on the ballot in November of 1962, and was passed by the people, thus establishing the City of Walker on November 8, 1962. Today the city's motto is: "From Solid Roots To Strong Branches." Walker is a vibrant and growing community reflecting a wonderful balance between long term established neighborhoods, schools, churches, and businesses with new and exciting developments. Walker is home to many commercial enterprises from the old family held businesses such as Bissell, Betz Foundry, and Meijer, to a major retail corridor on Alpine Avenue. A downtown development authority has been established in the Standale district which has made significant improvements to this unique area of the City. Each year, new commercial and industrial businesses select Walker as their new home. Walker is also the home to three public schools systems, as well as non-public schools. It has a fine library and a state of the art ice and fitness center. Recreation doesn't end there though. With golf courses, and plenty of walking trails there is always something to do. And just minutes away is the spectacular Lake Michigan, one the great lakes, and it certainly is great!
