Education
The educational arena in Defiance County offers a myriad of opportunities for all students from kindergarten through the twelfth grades.
The Defiance City School District has an approximate of 3,000 students. The district has four elementary buildings that house students from kindergarten to fourth grade. The curriculum focuses on the basic core subjects and is augmented by art, music, and technology programs.
The fifth an sixth grade students attend the Defiance Middle School where team teaching places the emphasis on basic education. The middle school offers an expanded library and computer lab where students can take advantage of electronic information.
Defiance Junior High School broadens the curriculum for seventh and eighth graders. Team teaching provides both the basic and elective offerings, while also giving individual student support. The junior high has an impressive computer lab and is also the first site in Northwest Ohio for the Channel 11 WeatherNet. Anyone visiting the junior high's home page can have a bird's eye view of downtown Defiance.
Defiance High School is the home of the 1997 Division II State Football Champs and the 1992 Division I State Baseball Champs. Over 1,050 students are enrolled at the senior high school and select from 140 offerings of required and elective courses that include: English, mathematics, science, history, social science, physical education, fine arts, instrumental and vocal music, speech and debate,
theatrical arts, foreign languages, home economics, industrial arts, business topics, and computer technology in drama, business, industrial arts and general computer classes. The School-to-Work initiative has been undertaken and is being incorporated into the current curriculum.
Academic excellence is evidenced through the district's students proficiency scores. Students, throughout various grade levels, have scored among the highest of the twenty-two districts in Northwest Ohio.
1997 Div. II State Champions - Defiance High School Football Team
An important educational component of the Defiance community is a grassroots organization called Defiance 2000. The group is a cross-section of business/industrial leaders, government officials, social services personnel, local educators and private citizens who jointly work toward a shared vision that supports the local educational base. A master plan is revised and updated each year to enhance
area students educational opportunities. Perhaps the most notable achievements of this organization are the mentoring program and Neighborhood Learning Center from which hundreds of children receive additional assistance in their schoolwork.
Defiance College sees its responsibility as preparing students who will graduate not only prepared for the world of work, but also prepared to be active participants in their communities. Defiance College seeks to develop within every student an understanding of the importance of community service and responsible citizenship. Toward that goal, the college has incorporated service learning into the
very mainstream of campus life and curriculum.
Chartered in 1850, the four-year, liberal arts college is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Students at Defiance College achieve their academic best while forming strong values of social responsibility rooted in the Christian tradition. The college is included in the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll of the Nation's Highest Character-Building Colleges.
Defiance College serves a student population of approximately 900, with 32 major areas of study leading to a bachelor's degree as well as master's program in education. The college's five signature academic programs are accounting with CPA track, criminal justice, elementary education, social work and restoration ecology. A 13-1 student to faculty ratio means each student can enjoy personal and individual attention.
Athletic programs at Defiance College are founded on three basic principles - academics, athletics and attitude. The college's goal is to provide students the opportunity to exhibit and enhance their athletic skills while preparing them academically and personally for productive and constructive futures. Defiance College is a member of NCAA Division III, offering 18 men's and women's sports. The college recently joined the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the nation's oldest athletic conference.
Defiance College recently completed a three-phase capital campaign , surpassing its $13.7 million goal by raising $16 million. The campaign has provided the Pilgrim Library; Justin F. Coressel Athletic Complex, one of the finest football and track complexes among Division III schools; the Kevin McCann Student Center; and Hubbard Hall, housing the college bookstore and student activities offices.
