The City of Milford began as Hageman's Mills, platted in January of 1806. The town's history has long been linked to the Little Miami River, the power source for the community's mills. The community also attracted early settlers with the First Methodist Sunday School, started in 1797. By 1815, when John Hageman headed for Indiana, the name of Milford came into use, signifying the community's good location for crossing the Little Miami. (A ford is a shallow place in the river.) By 1818, a wooden bridge had improved river crossing even more. In about 1815, Hortshorn & Sanders built the frame of a mill that would last most of the century. In 1828 Matthias Kugler, (son in-law of Christian Waldschmidt) bought the mill, Mill Race, a mansion now known as the Millcroft. This home was finally completed with a store on the first floor and living quarters above. Milford's most popular historic site is Promont on S.R. 28, former home of Resident-Governor-John Pattison. Pattison was born in Owensville in June of 1847. His parents owned a farm and a store there, where he attended the local one-room school. He was considered one of the youngest volunteers in Ohio's troops during the Civil War. It is believed that soldiers with Morgan's Raiders riding their horses up & down the local church steps so angered the young man that he joined company I of the 153rd Ohio Volunteers. Pattison bought Promont in 1879 paying $10,500 for the house and 56 acres. His father-in-law, a professor of Greek, upon seeing the house for the first time, suggested the name Promont as the house was situated high on a hill. It is still called Promont. John lived in the mansion until his death in 1906, a few months after he was elected Governor of Ohio. He had also been a Representative in the Ohio Legislature and the 53rd Congress in the House of Representatives. He drafted the first bill establishing rural free mail delivery. When elected governor, he was the only Democrat to win in a statewide sweep by Republicans.
